Medical Alert bracelets are ugly, no way around it...and I'm not a particularly fussy...but how do you convince a princess-pink-purple-unicorn-fairy type kid to wear one? By making it pretty, of course. The engraved tag came from Lauren's Hope. They sell interchangeable bands as well, but they were a bit pricey for the whopping 2 inch band my skinny minny needs for her wrist (we're talking $50-100 for the band alone!!). My mom is all into beading, but I've never tried my hand at it. (Beading requires one to actually wear jewelry...with the exception of my wedding band and earrings from Target which I never change...no jewelry here).
While we were on vacation in Maine, I had the time to stop into Caravan Beads...the things we do for our kids. It was great! I picked out the beads, they helped me pick the clasps and wires and then they had tables of tools and showed me how to put them together. 4 bands, 1 hour of my time, $20 and a ton of beads left over for another project. I can't say I'll take jewelry-making up as a hobby, but it wasn't as hard as I thought!

They look great! I have wanted to try making real jewlery with my daughter. So far we just have tried the plastic beads, which to not stay tied together. I end up with beads scattered all over the floor and K in tears...
The little green fish are awesome! We stick with a sportsband for my son's medic alert, otherwise it's too dangerous, for him and us.
Gosh, I had no idea bracelets could be so expensive to make. The most pricey thing my sons want these days are Pokemon cards! As for bracelets, my PA son is content with a black fabric sports band Medicalert bracelet. Up until a few months ago, he used to refer to it as his "watch"...
