Well, crap

>> Wednesday, September 17, 2008

When my third child was born last year, a little pale with a sprout of curly red hair on top resembling allergic kid #1, my first reaction was a loving, maternal "Oh, crap."  Well actually, truth be told, the reaction was a bit more barnyard crass than that.   He has been a super-sweet blessing to our family, but a rashy, wheezy (occasionally seizing) one at that.  Today's visit to our overly kind allergist proved my initial reaction to Baby Jack to be true.

Milk, egg, wheat, and barley skin tests...all painfully positive... and that's all he tested.  (If they're going to have multiple food allergies, is it too much to ask that they be the same among siblings? Apparently, yes.)  At least the saline control was negative, so he's not allergic to water or salt.   So I did what I always do after an allergist's visit, went and spent $150 on 2 bags of groceries at Whole Foods.  Don't worry, I'll perk up in a few days with a new resolve and some new recipes to prove it.

Oh I'm so sorry. Our food allergies got more numerous with each child. Last time my husband said he wanted another kid I said "are you crazy? what will it eat?!" Did they test for gluten? I'm thinking if he tested positive for wheat and barley you may want to watch anything with gluten in it. Best of luck to you all!

That just bites the big one. The grain/gluten allergies always seem like the most daunting ones to me. I'm so sorry you've got to take these ones on, too!

I really don't know what to say, It must be so hard for you. I guess I really do take for granted having a healthy daughter.

She had an allergic reaction last year on holiday and that scared the life out of me, we were abroad and had no clue what to do. But I'm so fortunate it's not a regular thing.

My friend's daugther has an egg allergy and it brings her out in really bad rashes. You inspired me to make her some egg-free cupcakes and I posted about them on my blog here:
